大正野球娘 – Taishō Yakyū Musume

May 23, 2010

Going to do two posts today, since I didn’t have time to do one yesterday. Anyways I think I will do anime related posts on the weekends. It is just more fun that way anyway.

This anime called Taishō Baseball Girls, was first published as a light novel series in 1925 and then recently has been made into an anime and manga adaptation. The setting is in 1925 Japan, where western ideas such as baseball is starting to circulate throughout the country. The plot is basically two girls forming a baseball team to prove that woman can just as well play baseball as boys can. These girls and the team they make go through many difficulties since it is still believed in this era that baseball is a man only sport and that girls should study to become housewives.

I believe that when the series was first published in 1925 that it was quite beneficial in spreading the idea of equality among the sexes. In an era where woman still had fewer rights then men in Japan, this type of literature would allow more women to realize that western ideas that promoted sex discrimination, if accepted, would hinder their movement toward equality. The manga and anime adaptations that have recently been made just gives a remainder to women and men of this equality of the sexes, by the re-telling of this story of struggle in modern times.
